Centre for Suicide Prevention and Millbrook Technologies Inc Launch River of Life

Centre for Suicide Prevention and Millbrook Technologies Inc Launch River of Life

Calgary, Alberta (Vocus) September 9, 2010

Canadians join world-wide efforts to acknowledge World Suicide Prevention Day. East and West have come together in a partnership to help prevent the growing rate of Aboriginal youth suicide.

The Centre for Suicide Prevention developed the content materials and Millbrook Technologies brought these to life in the first ever online Aboriginal suicide prevention training program in the world.

Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo, National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations says, “The River of Life is a practical tool that will be instrumental in building resiliency in communities and we are proud to support this initiative.”

This unique online training program is “Excellent! Covers a difficult topic related to different pieces of history. It has a message of resiliency and hope… it inspires you to do something” (C.E. Bird).

This course is “so much what people are hungry for, looking exactly for this content” (J.S., Youth Health Educator).

Centre for Suicide Prevention

The Centre for Suicide Prevention (CSP) is an education centre specializing in curricula development, training, and providing library and information services. The purpose of the Centre is to inform and equip people with additional knowledge and skills in the prevention of suicide.

“We are hopeful that ongoing discussions with government may result in financial support for this ‘one-of-a-kind’, first ever, online Aboriginal suicide prevention course. How truly proud we are, as Canadians, to offer this to our international friends” (Diane Yackel, CSP Executive Director).

Millbrook Technologies Inc.

Millbrook Technologies Inc. is located in Nova Scotia, Canada and is owned by the Millbrook First Nation. Millbrook Technologies Inc. specializes in the customization of advanced technologies and building unique courseware.

Who should take the program?

The prevention of Aboriginal youth suicide is a community effort and therefore prevention responsibility should not be left to a single person. Front line workers are obviously those directly involved in the health and well being of the youth in their community.

Mental health workers, addiction counsellors, nurses, youth counsellors, community outreach workers, family members and social services personnel are some of those occupations who should be equipped with the skills to identify and enhance the protective factors that will mitigate the risk of suicide.

In addition, we recommend that police officers, teachers, Friendship Centre staff, probation officers, correctional services workers, foster parents, Elders, band council members and clergy also participate.

Unfortunately too many communities wait until they are in crisis to mobilize their resources. The River of Life program has been designed to provide training to a very diverse group of people within the community to work together in the development of community based strategies. The knowledge provided and skills acquired will result in a positive preventative community action plan.

HealthGrades Announces Launch of New Physician Web Portal

HealthGrades Announces Launch of New Physician Web Portal

Denver, Colo. (Vocus/PRWEB) April 13, 2011

HealthGrades, the leading online destination for patients researching and selecting physicians, announced today the launch of a new web-based tool that empowers physicians and practice administrators to take control of their online reputation. This free, secure web application encourages ongoing physician engagement to verify and modify the information HealthGrades makes public in more than 750,000 online physician profiles. The HealthGrades Physician & Provider Portal is being officially unveiled at this week’s American Medical Group Association (AMGA) annual conference in Washington D.C.

“As a physician, I understand the professional challenge doctors face in managing online information,” said Dr. Rick May, HealthGrades Vice President of clinical quality services. “But public reporting is here to stay and will likely only increase in scope. It is time physicians leveraged the power of the web to benefit their patients and their practice. As the most heavily trafficked physician search site, HealthGrades is uniquely positioned to help.”

HealthGrades’ enhanced Portal is designed to enable physicians to take control of their online reputation, offering them the opportunity to respond publicly to patient satisfaction ratings, and assisting doctors in actively attracting the most appropriate patients. For example, adding customized and detailed information about medical areas of expertise, and a brief description of practice style helps patients better match with the right physician who meets their specific needs and expectations. Recent research has shown that the physician-patient relationship is strengthened when patients see themselves as similar to their physicians in personal beliefs, values, and communication, ultimately leading to better diagnoses and improved health outcomes.

HealthGrades is the most highly trafficked physician search site and helps 100 million patient visitors a year – more than all other provider ratings sites combined. Patients search more than 12 million HealthGrades physician profiles monthly and HealthGrades’ web properties are recognized by comScore as one of the top five health information destinations. Updates to doctors’ online profiles are shared across numerous online consumer web properties through relationships with Google, Bing and other health content distributors.

HealthGrades’ new, free physician Portal offers physicians:

The ability to edit existing information and enhance their profile with a photo or video; custom description of practice philosophy, specific areas of research or interest, procedures performed, conditions treated, and hospital affiliations

The option to respond publicly to patient satisfaction survey results

Tools to help practices collect more patient experience feedback

Customized reports about profile activity, including patient satisfaction and patient search     volume with peer comparisons

About HealthGrades

HealthGrades is America’s most trusted, independent source of physician information and hospital quality outcomes. HealthGrades’ online properties are the nation’s leading destination for physician search and empower more than 200 million consumers annually to make informed healthcare decisions.

NavigationArts Announces Launch of Redesigned MedEdPORTAL

NavigationArts Announces Launch of Redesigned MedEdPORTAL

A screenshot of AAMC’s MedEdPORTAL.

McLean, Virginia (PRWEB) August 09, 2011

NavigationArts, a strategic web consultancy, is pleased to announce the launch of a dynamic medical education portal for the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). MedEdPORTAL is a free, open education resource and was designed to promote educational scholarship and collaboration by facilitating the open exchange of peer-reviewed health education teaching and assessment resources. Currently, more than 10,000 health education institutions are utilizing MedEdPORTAL resources – representing over 190 countries around the globe.

NavigationArts was specifically engaged to redesign and rearchitect the existing site, which was not leveraging the full capabilities of a content management system and provided no opportunity for content reuse. The new information architecture delivers an optimized user experience, creates opportunities to reuse and share content, and lays a foundation for a suite of products that change the traditional way of accessing and utilizing health education materials. MedEdPORTAL’s flexibility provides extraordinary possibilities to customize and promote content through a multi-faceted, socially enabled learning experience.

AAMC Chief Academic Officer, John E. Prescott, MD, notes, “MedEdPORTAL has played an increasingly prominent role in the education of the healthcare provider of tomorrow. I have no doubt that these new enhancements will result in significant benefits to students and educators, and ultimately improve the health of the public.”

In addition, MedEdPORTAL has partnered with the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) in order to peer review and publish oral health content. The website redesign allows for interface customization while maintaining the full capabilities and accessibility of the MedEdPORTAL website and repository. The ADEA-customized MedEdPORTAL will launch in August. This new structure aims to accommodate partnerships with the remaining allied health professions to further drive inter-professionalism and innovation in health education.
