Karla Smith Foundation Joins Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in Kansas to Increase Mental Health Awareness

Karla Smith Foundation Volunteers on the Set of ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’

Ottawa, KS (PRWEB) August 09, 2011

The Karla Smith Foundation, a St. Louis area based non-profit organization that provides support to families and friends affected by mental illness and suicide, spent the first week of August on the set of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” working to build a new, dream home for the Allen Hill Family of Ottawa, Kansas. Retired Staff Sergeant Allen Hill was nearly killed by a massive roadside bomb while serving in Iraq and now lives with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

BringChange2Mind, a partner organization of the Karla Smith Foundation, nominated the Hill Family for “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”. BringChange2Mind was founded by The Fountain House in New York, the International Mental Health Research Organization (IMHRO), Children Adolescent and Bipolar Foundation (CABF), and Oscar-winning actress Glenn Close, whose sister, Jessie, has bipolar disorder. The non-profit’s mission is to fight the stigma that surrounds mental illness. The show, set to air in October, will focus on Sergeant Allen Hill, his wife, Gina, and their children. In selecting the Hill Family, ABC Extreme also agreed to feature mental illness awareness in the two-hour episode.

“This week has been an outpouring of support from a local community for a very deserving family,” said Kevin Smith, Vice-President of Karla Smith Foundation, who has been in Kansas all week working as a Volunteer Lead and helped setup the Mental Health Awareness Tent. “The topic of mental illness has opened a lot of people’s eyes in this area and will touch many more across the country when the show airs.”

While SSgt. Allen Hill has recovered from the physical wounds of war, he has developed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and just returned home from years-long inpatient treatment. Environmental triggers such as loud noises, crowds, dimly lit spaces and long hallways, can instigate Post Traumatic Stress Disorder episodes. The ‘extreme’ home is being built to make his treatment easier, as the home will be sound-proofed and will include a safe room for Allen to go in case of an episode. As not to trigger a PTSD episode for Allen, for the first time in the show’s eight year history, a silent revealing occurred. A crowd of several thousand people waving American flags showed their support by watching quietly for over 20 minutes as Ty Pennington welcomed the family during the famous ‘move that bus’ moment.

The Karla Smith Foundation has formed a strong relationship with SSgt. Hill and his wife Gina. Gina has become an active advocate for families whose loved ones suffer with PTSD. She is the author of an award nominated blog, has served on a media panel, and has spoken at mental health conferences and on Capitol Hill. In addition, Gina and her husband were interviewed on the Oprah Winfrey Show in May, 2009.

Gina will be speaking at the Karla Smith Foundation’s annual “Erase the Stigma Conference”, which will take place August 26-27, at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, Illinois. Gina will share her family’s hopes and struggles as she has steered her family through the maze of mental illness, treatment and recovery. Gina will address: journeying with loved ones with mental illness, family and marriage issues, and care giving as a mother of young children.

“This week a house was built with hammers, nails, sweat and tears, but a home was made with hope, grace and strength,” said Erin Hazen, a Karla Smith Foundation volunteer working in the catering tent.

The Hill Family edition of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” is set to air in October, 2011 and will be a special two hour episode. You can learn more about Allen Hill and his family on the BringChange2Mind Facebook Page.

THV Compozit Windows & Doors Supplies Windows And Installation For New “Extreme Makeover : Home Edition” House in Ottawa, Kansas

Ottawa, KS (PRWEB) August 09, 2011

THV Compozit Windows & Doors, a leader in energy efficient, sound reducing composite windows, happily donates more than 80 premium windows to the Hill family in Ottawa, Kansas as part of “Extreme Makeover : Home Edition”, the hit television show.

Staff Sergeant Allen Hill was almost killed by a massive roadside bomb while serving in Iraq. He has recovered from his physical wounds, but the injuries that we can’t see haunt him. Environmental triggers such as loud noises, dimly lit spaces and long hallways can instigate Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) episodes. The Sergeant has just completed long inpatient PTSD treatment far from home, and was ready to return. However, the house he once lived in is near both a rock quarry, where there are constant dynamite blasts, and a train yard that is a constant source of terrifying noises and vibrations. For Sergeant Hill to be reunited with his family, he needed a new home – one built with an emphasis on peace, tranquility and sound reduction. THV windows were up to the task and an integral part in making that happen.

THV Compozit windows, with frames constructed of Expanded Polymer Composites (EPC), triple-insulated (triple-pane) glass and an advanced insulated spacer system will not only help with noise reduction, but will also provide a highly energy efficient window therefore lowering energy costs for the Hill family in their new home.

THV CEO Charles L. Smith stated “With our 15 retail stores and over 70 independent dealers, including our presence in the Ottawa area, it’s great to be able to give back to the community that we’ve been a part of for so long. To be selected because of the sound reduction our windows provide gives me a great sense of pride. I personally worked on the site and thoroughly enjoyed my time there working with co-workers and in the town of Ottawa. We know the Hill family will enjoy our windows for years to come.”

ABOUT THV COMPOZIT WINDOWS & DOORS

Over the years THV Compozit Windows & Doors has served their vision to change the window industry. Initially focusing solely on the replacement window business, THV Compozit has evolved into a premiere window manufacturer, servicing many aspects of the home improvement industry today. Since their establishment, the company has grown to be a leader in the window industry, manufacturing, selling, and installing quality replacement windows and new construction windows across the United States. THV Compozit Windows & Doors are a division of THV Holdings LLC and True Home Value, Inc. which owns several retail outlets throughout the Midwest and partners with more than 70 independent dealers throughout the United States. True Home Value is the 7th largest home remodeler in the country (The Replacement 100, Hanley Wood).

Kansas Health Information Network and ICA Discuss Finding Success in a Large and Diverse Multi-State HIE

Kansas Health Information Network and ICA Discuss Finding Success in a Large and Diverse Multi-State HIE

New York, NY (PRWEB) August 11, 2011

The Institute for Health Technology Transformation announced today that Laura McCrary, EdD, Executive Director, Kansas Health Information Network and John Tempesco, Chief Marketing Officer, ICA will be delivering a case study entitled, “Finding Success in a Large and Diverse Multi-State HIE” at the Institute’s Health IT Summit in Seattle taking place August 15-16, 2011 at the Renaissance Seattle Hotel.

Dr. McCrary and John Tempesco will provide a high-level overview of the Kansas Health Information Network (KHIN) project discussing how this model works well for both urban and rural communities and how it is bringing this community model to all participants, not just to hospitals. They will also discuss how KHIN defines a community as well as the challenges of linking both urban and rural settings with their implicit differences. Kansas has more critical access hospitals than any other state in the US and Dr. McCrary and John Tempesco will share how this model can be replicated elsewhere in the country.

“KHIN provides services to all of Kansas and portions of northwest Missouri encompassing large urban and rural areas. KHIN’s goal is to connect 80% of healthcare providers in the service area including 163 hospitals, 4500 physicians, 100 public health departments, 40 community mental health centers and 400 long term care facilities. Our challenge of linking this large population requires health information exchange functionality that integrates with disparate EMR/EHR systems and provides the correct clinical data at the point-of-care. ICA’s CareAlign® was the tool we needed to accomplish this complex task,” McCrary says.

The iHT2 Health IT Summit in Seattle is the premier executive summit focused on the strategies and tools that are re-defining customer care, collaboration and efficiency in the health care provider markets.
